Two in-person and online events this week with Scholars at Risk to learn and raise awareness about the state of academic freedom across the Americas

Hosted at the Open Society Foundations, please join Scholars at Risk and a number of our close partners for a free in-person and online event, “The Right to Academic Freedom and the Advancement of the SDGs and Human Rights: Leveraging Sustainable Development and Human Rights, Including the Right to Science, for the People and Planet.” The event will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 5:00 - 6:30PM EST and can be attended either in-person or online.

This event is aimed at reinforcing the importance of academic freedom for the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Science, technology, and innovation play a pivotal role in fulfilling the SDGs and the Pact for the Future and in countering local and global crises. Scientific progress, however, requires the protection of academic freedom and the right to think, question, and share ideas freely. Scholars at Risk is therefore pleased to promote this event with our human rights and academic freedom partners across the Americas.

This event will be moderated by Camilla Croso, CAFA. Speakers include: Farida Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education; David Robinson, Education International; Henry Wright, Global Student Forum; Pablo Vommaro, Latin American Council of Social Sciences or CLACSO; Lily Gray, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and Jesse Levine, Scholars at Risk.

Thursday’s event is co-organized by Scholars at Risk (SAR), the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education Farida Shaheed, UNESCO, Education International, Global Student Forum, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), the Latin American Campaign for the Right to Education (CLADE) and Open Society Foundations (OSF).

This event is in English only.

Be sure to also join Scholars at Risk for a second event on safeguarding higher education communities.

Registration is now open for our event, “Symposium on Academic Freedom and Attacks on Education as a Public Good.” It will take place on Friday, October 25, 2024 from 8:30AM - 3:30PM EST and can be attended either in-person or online. Lunch will be provided for in-person participants.

This event brings together scholars, educators, human rights advocates, union leaders, and students from the United States and beyond, to discuss academic freedom in the US and concrete steps state and higher education leaders can take to safeguard this fundamental right.

The Symposium will specifically address attacks on university autonomy, censorship of curricula and book banning, repressions of student voices, and corporate influences over curricula and resources, and will call for immediate action to defend academic freedom as a fundamental pillar of democracy and education.

This event is co-organized by Scholars at Risk, the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas, PEN America, and the New York University Department of Applied Statistics, Social Sciences, and Humanities (ASH). Please note that this event is in English only.
